Introduction

Among the granite rocks and hills that dominate my town and its environs, Oruku is the most prominent and regal. From a distance, climbing to the peak of this one of nature’s masterpieces looks insurmountable. And that was my experience the first time I tried to ascend the rock in the company of a friend back in 1981. Our attempt was unsuccessful.

In December 2020, I repeated the adventure I put off 40 years ago. This time, I made it to the top. Mundane as it was, it has been one of my life’s long goals. Prepare to be amazed and carried along in my serendipity and some of the amazing wonders I captured on that trip. The memories linger on and the lessons learned are for life.
